National Census Results

The results of Census 2001 have been released to the public.

Scilly shows an aging population, with the bulk of Islanders being over 45 years old (modal range: 50-54). Of the 2153 locals, ?50% are married and ?25% are single (25% divorced, separated, widowed or other).

200 more people are living in the Islands than since the last census in 1991.

The population density, number of people per hectare, is 1.3. The national average is 2.4. (Ranked 307 out of 376 English and Welsh regions.)

70% of the population (1517 people) are Christian; 20% (434) have no religion; 0.3% (7) are Buddhist; the remainer of the population did not state their religion.

Of the 1615 “potent population”, 16-74 year olds, i.e. those able to work, 1262 are employed. This is the highest percentage of employed people per population in England and Wales.

Round Island To Be Switched Off

Trinity House will make an alteration to Round Island?s illumination. From March, the light will not be on during the daytime at times of good visibility.

Trinity House announcement:

Date : On or about 1 st March, 2003.
Amendment: Navigation light to be exhibited during night time and in periods of reduced visibility only; characteristics to remain unaltered, but nominal range reduced to 18 miles.

Scilly Increases Internet Presence

Scilly?s presence on the internet is always increasing. A new web site has been set up in an effort to make items made on the Islands available over the internet. The new web site has been created by John Peacock.

ScillyShop.com “is a commercial site that will allow any residents of the Isles of Scilly to sell merchandise online on a commission basis.”
