Policing Pedal Power

Wednesday, June 4th, 2003

Local police will now be patroling the Islands by bike, as well as the Landrover. Dave Blanning, West Cornwall and Scilly Special Constabulary district officer, bought over the bikes and is impressed with the reaction.

“It is a great way of getting around. You can actually stop and speak to people or as you pass by say ?good morning?. I was amazed at the response, absolutely superb. It was very well received which is most encouraging.”

The cycling bobby seems especially suited to Scilly with it?s small community, from which the local police will get more of a reaction, more so than an urban area.

Nappy Plague Explained

Wednesday, June 4th, 2003

Richard Larn, local ship-wreck expert who has done work for the Lloyd?s Shipwreck Index, explained the abundance of nappies on the Islands? shores in early March.

Apparently, the nappies came from a container carried by the MV Sybille, a German-registered veseel. 10 containers had been lost from her cargo when off the Channel Islands during a severe gale. Two containers contained the “wipes”.

Mr Larn commented: “It is interesting to note that Lloyd?s List estimate that at any given moment in time there are some 12,000 cargo containers adrift in the open sea across the world having been lost overboard.”
