South West EU Vote

Monday, June 14th, 2004

The Southwest reflected the general opinion of the UK last night in the result of the European elections: a loss for labour and conservative votes, and a gain for the liberal democrats and UKIP.

In the Southwest, the only change in MEPs was the loss of a conservative seat (A Stockton) in the European Parliament, and a gain of a UKIP seat.

The Southwest now has the following representatives:
3 Conservative (G Chichester, C Jackson, N Parish)
2 UK Independance Party (G Booth, R Knapman)
1 Liberal Democrat (G Watson)
1 Labour (G Ford)

The votes are done on a proportional representation basis for the European Parliament, as opposed to one person winning a seat in a particular ward, as in the UK general elections.

The Southwest region includes the mainland between Glostershire and Cornwall, the Isles of Scilly and Gibraltar.

There will be several factors triggering the change in public opinion:
- UKIP votes increasing due to greater scepticism of European policies. Votes probably coming from ex-Conservative voters wanting a more hard-line stance on Europe. The appearance of Kilroy-Silk also raises the profile of the party.
- Labour votes moving to Liberal Democrat. The two parties are pro-Europe, the Lib Dems being more keen - the only party that promotes joining the Euro. The move may come from the loss of support for Tony Blair, who is even loosing support within his own party.

Let us know your opinions on Europe, the Euro and the European Elections in our forums.

Sunday sailing saves fogbound passengers

Sunday, June 6th, 2004

The Sunday sailing of the Scillonian is a saviour for Saturday’s fogbound visitors to the islands.

Thick fog on Friday and Saturday caused massive delays to flights to and from the islands. It resulted in two sailings on the Scillonian on Saturday. Unfortunately there were too many passengers for the boat. So 15 passengers volunteered to get off the vessel and spend the night in Penzance.

Luckily for them Sunday had a Pirate FM Scillonian Sunday sailing to Scilly scheduled.

Some fog bound passengers were lucky enough to get seats on the jet propelled boats “The Cyclone”, “The Wizard” and “Lightening” which did trips to and from the mainland for desperate passengers.

Sunday, June 6th, 2004

Bryher has had it’s second new church window put in.

Islanders helped to raise the money for the new church windows with events like the Bryher Fete. Regular visitors to the island also helped in the effort.

The new window was made by Oriel Hicks on St Mary’s. It depicts Creation. Words inscribed on the stained glass window say “And God said let the waters bring forth abundantly the moving creature that hath life.”

The residents of Bryher are continuing their fundraising campaign to have two more new windows.

Wilson’s son says OU came out of a holiday on Scilly

Wednesday, June 2nd, 2004

This week Dr Robin Wilson, the son of former Prime Minister Harold Wilson, received a degree from the university his father founded.

Dr Wilson told The Independent it took him 17 years to complete his degree because he had to take 7 years out of studying because of his OU career.

He added that he thought his father would be proud of his achievements and the achievements of the OU. But he went on to add about his father: “I remember the beginnings of the OU in my father’s mind, as far back as 1963. We were on holiday in the Scilly Isles, and on Easter Day, just after church, I recall him writing out the details of this crazy idea.”

Harold Wilson was a well known lover of Scilly, once holding a press conference from Samson. He is now buried on the islands.
