Ready to Camel Rock 2005?

This is traditionally the weekend for entertainment on St Mary’s, with a carnival in past years, which has more recently been replaced by Camel Rock.

Live music is being played on Saturday and Sunday.

Playgroup Committee Creates Calendar Fundraiser

St Mary’s Playgroup are hoping to raise ?3000-?4000 by creating a calendar featuring many of the current 40 pre-schoolers in the future, where they are taking part in Island life: gig rowing, crewing, bird-watching. The money will be required because the number of attendants at the pre-school is due to drop to 15 or so, hence less money will be coming in to aid the playgroup.

The calendar will be available on Scillonian III, at the airport, from the Tourist Information Centre and in hotels. It will cost ?6.

Builder Banned For 7 Years

Andrew Stephan, a builder from Telegraph Street, St Mary’s has been banned from the Islands for 7 years due to 10 counts of theft which he pleeded guilty to at Truro Crown Court.

The offender’s crimes, which were stealing womens sex toys and underwear, were deemed not harsh enough for a jail sentence, so received 150 hours unpaid community service, a ?1000 fine for costs and an asbo (anti-social behaviour disorder), banning Mr Stephan from the Islands or entry into a house without permission.

Weekenders Keen To Recruit Islanders

Pam Wessel of Weekenders, a ladies’ fashion ‘direct selling business’, is keen to recruit Islanders in order that they can “own their own business with very little outlay.”

Employees are asked to produce clothing at their own rate and sell the products in any way possible, other than selling in shops.

Greenpeace: SW Airport Expansion Damages

Newquay Airport will be one of the first airports to limit the damages done to the environment by the heavy pollution which occurs at airports.

Newquay airport are planning to start a programme of planting trees to counteract the environmental damage. The idea is of
carbon offsetting, the removal of the carbon in the atmosphere, from aircraft and vehicles, by increasing the florae in the area.

New York - Scilly Rowing Record Remains

A recent attempt at breaking a 108-year old transatlantic rowing record failed when Dutch rowers were blown 100 miles off the Islands in strong winds, rendering them unable to finish the race.
